Energy Management – EMIS, New Gold
Energy management at New Gold’s New Afton mine, helps to achieve ISO 50001 energy certification.
CHALLENGE: ENERGY MANAGEMENT A FOCUS FOR NEW AFTON MINE
‘Investing in longer-lived, larger-scale, lower-cost assets’ with social and environmental responsibility is a New Goal corporate commitment. So when their New Afton mine was under construction, New Gold was already preparing a comprehensive Energy Management Plan.
Actemium implemented the solution within a fast-tracked timeline of 6 months, no small task given the extensive metering network required at the site.
SOLUTION: ACTEMIUM EMIS SOLUTION MONITORS 160+ CONSUMPTION DATA POINTS
Realizing the efficiencies of self-sustaining energy management, the New Gold team set a goal to meet the ISO 50001 standard. Actemium was selected for the ambitious project. Their solution, based on RtTech Software’s RtEMIS, answered the requirements of the company’s key stakeholders as well as compliance with Natural Resource Canada’s guidelines and ISO 50001 standards. The solution also required a seamless integration with New Gold’s OSIsoft PI System™.
Actemium implemented the solution within a fast-tracked timeline of 6 months, no small task given the extensive metering network required at the site. A network of 157 electrical sub-meters, 6 gas meters and a data concentrator are now monitored, with four primary Energy Account Centers (EACs) aligned with financial cost accounting requirements.
In March 2014, the New Afton mine met their goal to become the first ISO 50001 certified mining facility in North America.
RESULTS:
- 6 months from initial solution design to complete integration
- A network of 157 electrical sub-meters, 6 gas meters and a data concentrator are now monitored, with four primary
- Energy Account Centers (EACs) aligned with financial cost accounting requirements.
- The first ISO 50001 Certified mining facility in North America
